The Birthday Brunch Tradition Continues Today...

My good friends, Teresa and Colleen, and I were all in a homegroup Bible study together several years ago when we lived in San Jose. And the women in that group always made a special "to-do" ("ta-da" ?!?) with each other's birthdays. Time brought change, as time typically does, and now we three all live in SoCal, and we still delight to make a to-do over each other's birthdays.

Now, I must admit, I'm no domestic diva. And entertaining is not my forte. I have a hard time making things (food, decor, etc.) pretty. But I'm quite tickled with what I've come up with for this lunch for my buddies. A couple days ago I found these sunflowers at Trader Joe's and thus spawned the beginning of a vision...

Here's some of what I pulled together yesterday:

Recipes (including Heidi's Blackberry Gingerbread Cake), food prep, my idea page torn out of the Crate & Barrel catalog, preliminary dining room set-up, and assembling the photo cards I made them as a gift.

It's a good thing there's only three of us. Because I only have three yellow plates. Why only three? Cause here's the rest of the set (don't look at the crumbs on my shelf - I lack the pride and patience to photoshop them out):

I'm so looking forward to this morning with my friends. I just hope I time all the food correctly. :-}

Entertaining is a stressfull thing for me too. It looks like you set things up nicely though. I love that first picture of the sunflower, what a great effect on it!

What do you mean you have a hard time making things look pretty?!?! That table looks gorgeous. You have such an eye for photography, I'm guessing that aesthetic spills over into other areas of your life and you're just being hard on yourself. Seriously!

Leslie, you young thang ... who you calling "old"??? jk!

Candid - the recipe didn't call it a quiche, but it had sausage, apples, bread, milk, cheese and lots of eggs in it. (sounds quiche-y to me...)

Kysha - yes! All thanks to you and your clear directions to clear directions!! :-)

Heidi - you have no idea. I wish the aesthetic spilled over in other places!! Tho, this time, my cup runneth'ed over :-) And your Gingerbread recipe ... sooo divine.

Wow, talk about making a big deal out of birthdays - remember when Teresa (& you) organized such an amazing surprise birthday party for my 25th, that fancy picnic up on the hill at Rancho San Antonio? I couldn't believe it. I'm not sure I've ever been more thoroughly and elaborately and pleasantly surprised in my life!

Saw Teresa's bday on the cal recently but didn't get around to doing anything - glad you did such a nice get-together. Say hello from me in Switzerland next time you see Teresa & Colleen! Miss you guys!
