Huali Lani Komohana, part 1

The end of August saw our two eldest dudes starting campus classes and the other three of us heading to Kauai.  Having our once all-in-the-same-place-all-the-time family split into multiple locations will likely someday feel normal.

A room with a really nice view.  Watching weather is my favorite.

Guava.  Everywhere.  On the tree.  On the ground,  The smell in the air.  So awesome.

kauai-5
Fire in the sky...

kauai-6
The reading room ...

kauai-7
With a spectacularly distracting view.  Not complaining.

The spot we all jockeyed for...

Big bugs.  This picture (below) doesn't do this moth justice.  It was as big as Big Dude's hand.  You can thank me for sharing this big bug with you.  And NOT the big cane spider we found *inside* the house.

Homer in a hammock...

kauai-12kauai-13
Exploring.  Big boulders.  Swim holes.  Such a gorgeous river.  (annoying mosquitos - kinda complaining about that)

An afternoon's walk in Kilauea.  Through the Wai Koa Plantation - believe it or not, on a tiny dot of an island in the Pacific, there exists the largest Mahogany tree farm in the US.  We walked and walked and walked, a four mile loop...

At the end of the loop was a stone dam built in the 1880s.  Super pretty.

I was super happy with this walk - no mountains to scale and lovely mahagonies to meander amongst. Pretty scenery all around.  The dudes thought this was totally lame.  That there must have been a more direct route to get here.

They needed yummy Fish Market to recover from the ridiculousness of that four miles.

kauai-29
A different day, a beach down the road ...

kauai-30
A teeny tiny crab...

kauai-31kauai-32
Walk softly, carry a big stick, and run quickly between the wave sets if you absolutely refuse to remove your shoes and socks...
